There are many possible reasons why your mouse may not be working. Some of the most common causes could be due to a hardware issue, a faulty USB port, incorrect settings, or a software problem.
1. Hardware Issues:
A hardware issue can be caused by physical problems with the mouse itself, or with the USB port it is plugged into. Most often, hardware issues are related to a connection or power issue.
• Check that the USB cable is securely connected to the mouse and the computer. If it is loose, gently push it all the way in so that it is secure.
• If you are using a wireless mouse, check that the batteries are charged and that the wireless receiver is properly connected to the USB port on the computer.
• If you recently updated your computer’s operating system, it may have replaced the driver for the mouse. Reinstalling the mouse driver, or updating it to the most recent version, can help resolve the issue.
2. Faulty USB Port:
If the mouse is plugged into a faulty USB port, it will not work correctly. So, you should check the port itself to make sure it is functioning correctly.
• Make sure the USB port is receiving power. Try plugging something else into the port, like a USB drive or printer, to test if it is functioning correctly.
• If the port is not functioning properly, try plugging the mouse into another port. You may need to use a different type of port, such as a USB-C port, or a USB hub if there are no other ports available.
3. Incorrect Settings:
If the mouse settings have been changed from the default settings, they may need to be adjusted to get the mouse to work properly.
• Right-click on the desktop, select Settings, then choose Mouse and Touchpad.
• You can find all the available settings for your mouse in this window. Make sure that all the settings are correct for your particular type of mouse.
• You might also need to adjust the mouse sensitivity. This can usually be done by adjusting the scroll speed, pointer speed, and double-click speed.
4. Software Problems:
Software problems can also prevent your mouse from working properly.
• If you recently installed a new program or update to your computer, this could have caused your mouse to stop working. Uninstalling the program or update could help.
• You can also try restarting the computer to see if this resolves the issue. If not, then try booting into Safe Mode to see if the mouse works in this mode.
• If nothing else works, you may need to perform a system restore to an earlier point in time when the mouse was working correctly.
