There could be a few different reasons why there is no sound coming out of your speakers. To determine why, it’s important to first consider the different components that are invariably involved in a sound system and the potential causes for the lack of sound.
The first things to examine include the physical connections between the audio source (i.e. the computer, phone, radio, etc.) and the speakers. Depending on the type of connection, certain cables and adapters may be required and these should always be checked first. The plugs should fit snugly into the jack. Another possibility is electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can be caused by household appliances like vacuum cleaners or microwaves. Move the speakers away from any other appliance to see if this helps improve the sound.
Once the physical connections have been checked, the next step is to check the sound settings on the device. On Windows 10 computers, there should be an icon shaped like a speaker in the notification area at the bottom right of the desktop. Use the volume mixer to make sure all the applications’ volumes are set to a reasonable level and that the master volume isn’t muted or turned all the way down. You can also check the sound settings in the Control Panel. Go to Hardware and Sound, then to Sound. Make sure that the correct speakers are listed as the default playback device and adjust any other settings as necessary. If you are using a laptop, check the sound settings and make sure the laptop isn’t set to use its internal speakers instead of the external ones.
If the sound settings have been checked and there is still no sound, the issue could lie within the speakers themselves. Ensure that they have power and that any batteries are correctly installed and/or charged. Inspect the speaker wires to make sure they are correctly attached to the audio source and the speaker itself. Also, check the audio source’s output settings and make sure they are set correctly. For instance, if you are using a television, it may be set to output the sound through HDMI rather than the speakers.
In some cases, the speakers might be physically damaged or defective. Visually inspect the speakers to make sure nothing appears to be broken or damaged, such as distorted speaker cones or missing cords. If possible, try another pair of speakers to make sure the problem is not with the audio source.
Finally, if all of the above steps have been taken but the problem still persists, it could be because of a driver issue. Drivers are what allow a device to communicate with the sound card. To update your sound driver, go to the manufacturer’s website and download the latest version.
Although it can be difficult to diagnose why there is no sound coming from your speakers, hopefully the steps outlined here will help you to identify and resolve the issue.
