There are a variety of factors that may be preventing a display from appearing on a computer monitor. The most likely problems include an issue with the monitor itself, a problem with the video card, an issue with the cables connecting the monitor to the computer, or a problem with the computer settings.
Monitor Issues
If the monitor is not powering on, or the power cord is not firmly connected to the back of the monitor, the monitor will not display any image. The power cable should be correctly positioned and securely connected to the “Power” port on the back of the monitor. If the power cable connection is secure, check whether the monitor is receiving power by looking for a small light on the front of the monitor. If the light is not illuminated, the monitor is not receiving power and should be serviced or replaced.
If the monitor is receiving power, but no display is visible, the issue may be related to the menu settings. Check the physical controls on the bottom of the monitor to ensure the menu settings are enabled and configured correctly. If the monitor has a reset button, use it to restore the factory settings.
Video Card Issues
The video card may be preventing the monitor from displaying a picture. To check the video card, open the case and ensure the video card is securely seated in the expansion slot. Also check that the video card connectors are firmly attached to the video ports on the motherboard. If either the video card or the connectors appear damaged or corroded, the video card may need to be replaced.
Cabling Issues
If the video card appears to be functioning properly, check that the cables to the monitor are connected correctly. Make sure that the video cable is securely connected to both the video card and the monitor. Also check that the monitor is receiving power from the power supply. Physically inspect the connections to make sure they are tight, clean and free of damage.
Computer Settings
If the monitor is receiving power and the cables are connected properly, the issue may be related to the computer settings. In some cases, the computer may be set to output the display signal to an incorrect port. This can occur if the computer was recently upgraded with a new video card and the correct display settings have not been configured. To correct this issue, enter the computer’s BIOS or setup menu and configure the display settings to display on the correct video port.
If the monitor continues to lack a display even after these steps have been taken, the monitor may have a hardware fault and will require service.
