If you are looking to replace your laptop fan yourself, the following steps can help you.
Requirements: Replacement fan, Phillips screwdriver, and a few plastic pry tools (optional)
Step 1: Research the Right Fan
Before you buy the fan, make sure you have the exact model number for your laptop displayed on the underside or inside the battery compartment. Take this model number to an online store and search for a compatible fan. If you cannot find the model number or no compatible fan is available, look for a fan with the same size, type of connection and voltage.
Step 2: Prepare for Disassembly
Shutdown your laptop, disconnect all cables and devices, then remove the battery. Turn the laptop over and remove all visible screws on the bottom of the laptop. Use a magnetic tray or container to keep all of the screws organized if needed. Some laptop models may require additional disassembly steps, so be sure to check your manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 3: Remove the Old Fan
Once you have removed all of the visible screws, you can start to remove the lower casing of the laptop. If there are any more screws holding the casing together, remove those first. Then, use a plastic pry tool to carefully remove the back panel. For more stubborn panels, a hair dryer can help to soften the adhesive.
Once the panel is off, locate the fan and disconnect the power cable. There will usually be two small screws securing the fan to the laptop. Remove these and the fan should come free from the laptop.
Step 4: Install the New Fan
Once the old fan is removed, take the new one and place it into the same position as the old one. Make sure the fan aligns correctly and then secure it in place with the screws. Connect the fan’s power cable, making sure it is firmly connected.
Step 5: Reassemble the Laptop
Once the fan is secured in place, start to reassemble the laptop by putting back the bottom panel and all of the screws. Replace the battery, connect any external cables and then turn on the laptop to make sure everything is working properly.
These steps should provide you with a quick and easy way to replace your laptop fan. Be sure to use caution when disassembling and reassembling your laptop and follow the instructions for your specific laptop model.
