Renaming a zip file is a relatively simple process that can be achieved in a few steps, depending on the operating system being used. In general, unzipping the file and renaming the individual files or folders within it prior to zipping the file again is usually the most straightforward way of changing the name of a zip file.
For Windows Users
1. Right click on the zip file you wish to rename then select ‘Rename’.
2. Enter the new zip file name, complete with the file extension (e.g. .zip).
3. Press ‘Enter’ or click away from the box to save the changes.
For Mac Users
1. Right click on the zip file you wish to rename then select ‘Get Info’.
2. The file’s information will appear in a new window.
3. Edit the ‘Name & Extension’ field to give the zip file the desired name, including its file extension (e.g. .zip).
4. Close the window to save the changes.
For Linux users
1. Right click on the zip file you wish to rename then select ‘Rename’.
2. Enter the new zip file name, complete with the file extension (e.g. .zip).
3. Press ‘Enter’ or click away from the box to save the changes.
Alternatively, if the zip file contains a single file, it may be possible to use a file archiving utility such as WinRAR or 7-Zip to rename the file without needing to unzip the entire folder.
1. Launch the file archiving program.
2. Open the zip file containing the file you wish to rename.
3. Select the file and click ‘Rename’.
4. Enter the desired new file name and press ‘OK’.
5. Save the changes.
In some cases, if the zip file contains multiple files and folders, it may also be possible to extract all of the contents using an archiving program and then re-compress them into a new zip file with the desired file name.
1. Launch the file archiving program.
2. Open the zip file containing the files you wish to rename.
3. Extract all of the files and folders so they are saved to a separate directory.
4. Select the newly extracted directory and create a new compressed file.
5. Add a name for the new compressed file, making sure to include the correct file extension (e.g. .zip).
6. Save the file.
Whichever method you choose to rename a zip file, make sure to check its contents before deleting the original file to ensure all of the files within it have been successfully transferred.
