To open a .txt file in Windows the user must first locate the file. This can be done by navigating to its directory in File Explorer or by searching for it using the search bar in File Explorer. The user can then right-click on the file and select “Open with” from the context menu, or they can double-click on the file.
If the user selects “Open with” they will be presented with a list of applications that can open the file. The list of applications may include applications such as Notepad, WordPad, Microsoft Word, Excel, and more. The user then needs to select the application they would like to open the file in.
If the user double-clicks on the file, Windows will open it in the default application for .txt files set by the user’s machine. By default, this is usually going to be Notepad.
In some cases, the user might want to open .txt files in a specific application that is not their default application. For example, the user might want to open a .txt file in Microsoft Word. To do this, they need to right-click on the file and select “Open with”, then select “Choose another app”. From here, the user can select the application they would like to open the file in and check the box that reads “Always use this app to open .txt files”.
Once the user has opened the file in the desired application, they can begin editing or viewing the contents of the file.
