The .docx document format is the default file type for documents created using Microsoft Word version 2007 and newer. To open a .docx document, you must have either Microsoft Word or a compatible application installed on your computer.
If you use Microsoft Word, then select the ‘File’ tab, click ‘Open’ and select the .docx file you wish to open. In the ‘Files of Type’ drop-down menu, select ‘Word Document’ and click ‘Open’.
If you do not have Microsoft Word or an alternative installed on your computer, then you could install a free office suite such as Apache Open Office, LibreOffice or WPS Office. These are compatible with the .docx format and provide a range of applications – including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs – that can be used to open and edit .docx documents.
Alternatively, there are also some websites which allow you to view .docx documents without needing to download any software onto your computer. For example, Zamzar is an online service which allows you to convert and download the .docx file in different formats, such as PDF or HTML, so you can view it in the web browser.
Finally, if you don’t want to install any software or use online services to view the .docx document, then a mobile app could be another solution. Microsoft itself offers a Word Mobile app (which is part of the Microsoft Office Mobile package) that is available on both iOS and Android devices. This allows you to view, edit and create .docx documents anywhere.
