1. Right-click the file you want to change the type for and select Properties from the context menu.
2. Go to the General tab and click on the Change button located next to the “Type of file” field.
3. In the new window that appears, select the desired file type from the list.
4. Click OK in the Properties window to confirm your changes.
5. If a confirmation dialog appears, click Yes.
6. The file type should now be changed. To check this, simply right-click the file again and access its Properties.
7. Some files may require further steps to change their type. For example, if you need to change the extension of an image file, you will have to perform additional steps. To do so, right-click the file and select Rename.
8. Edit the name of the file so it has the file type’s extension, such as .jpg or .png.
9. Click Enter to save the changes and the file type should now be changed.
10. Windows also provides some tools that can help you to change the file type more easily. One of these tools is the File Types Manager which is available in most versions of Windows.
11. To access this tool, press the Win + R keys on your keyboard and then type ftype in the Run dialog box.
12. Press Enter to open the File Types Manager. Here you can select the file type that you want to change and see all the programs and extensions associated with it.
13. You can then edit, delete, or add new associations for that particular file type. For example, if you want to change a file type from .txt to .doc, you can locate the .txt extension and modify it to .doc.
14. Another tool that you can use is the Program Access and Defaults window which is available in certain versions of Windows. To access this tool, open Control Panel and navigate to Programs.
15. Here you can select the Program Access and Defaults option and then choose the type of file that you want to change in the File Associations section.
16. Finally, you can also use a third-party file conversion software to change the file type. These tools, such as XnConvert or Pixillion Image Converter, allow you to convert files from one format to another with just a few clicks.
