1. Setting a File or Folder to Read-Only in Windows
The read-only attribute is a file or folder property that can be used to protect and secure important data from being accidentally modified, deleted, or overwritten. In this article, we will discuss how to set a file or folder to read-only in Windows.
Note: A read-only file and folder will still be accessible and viewable by users with access rights.
Step 1: Right-click on the File or Folder
To set a file or folder to read-only, right-click on the file or folder you want to set as read-only.
Step 2: Select “Properties”
From the context menu that appears, select “Properties”.
Step 3: Select the Read-Only checkbox
In the Properties window that appears, select the “Read-only” checkbox. This will set the file or folder to read-only.
Step 4: Click “OK”
After selecting the read-only checkbox, click “OK” to save the changes.
Step 5: Confirm Read-Only Status
To confirm that the file or folder is set to read-only, right-click on it and select “Properties” again. The Read-only checkbox should now be selected.
Step 6: Apply the Change to Subfolders
If the folder that was set to read-only contains subfolders, you can apply the same read-only attribute to all of these subfolders. In the Properties window, select the “Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files” checkbox and click “OK” to save the changes.
You have now successfully set a file or folder to read-only in Windows. You can follow the same steps to toggle the read-only attribute on and off.
