Windows allows users to change the icon associated with a file, so that it will be displayed more prominently in Windows Explorer and other programs. There are two ways to do this: manually, or by using a third-party application.
Manually changing the icon:
1. Locate the file for which you want to change the icon. Right-click the file and select Properties.
2. Select the Shortcut tab, then click Change Icon.
3. You can either choose one of the icons provided, or click Browse to select an icon of your own. Find the location of the icon file, select it, and press Open.
4. Once you’ve chosen the icon, click OK to finalize your changes.
Using a third-party tool:
1. Download and install a third-party program – such as IconPhile or FileTypesMan – that can change the icon associated with a file type.
2. Run the program, and find the file type associated with the file you want to change the icon for.
3. Select the icon associated with the file type and click Change Icon.
4. Browse for the icon file you would like to use and select it.
5. Press OK to finish the process.
Keep in mind that the changes made by a third-party application will only affect the current user. If you want the changes to be applied to all users on the system, you will need to run the program with administrative privileges.
Once you’ve changed the icon of a file, it will now be displayed more prominently in Windows Explorer and other programs, allowing you to quickly recognize the file type at a glance.
