Basic cleaning and maintenance of a computer is an important step in extending the life of the computer and keeping it running like new. In order to keep everything running smoothly, it is important to regularly dust off the outside of the computer and clean out all the dust that can accumulate inside. With the proper tools and techniques, basic computer maintenance and cleaning can be done in a few simple steps.
1. Power Off The Computer
The first step of any computer hardware maintenance session is to power off the computer and unplug the power cord. Doing so ensures the safety of the computer hardware and the person performing the maintenance. Additionally, remove any batteries from their devices as well, such as wireless mice or keyboards.
2. Cleaning The Exterior
In order to remove dust and dirt from the exterior of the computer, use a canned air duster which can blow out dust particles and also get into tight crevices. Be sure to stand at least 24 inches away during the cleaning process in order to avoid potential static shocks. When cleaning other peripherals, such as monitors and keyboards, use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.
3. Open Up The Computer
To clean the inside of the computer, you will need to open up the case of the computer. Be sure to wear an anti-static wrist strap when handling the components inside the computer, as static electricity can damage sensitive parts. Note where all the wires and cables are connected for easy reassembly later.
4. Vacuum Out Dust
Using a vacuum cleaner with an extending crevice tool or a vacuum cleaner designed specifically for computers, gently vacuum around all the components inside the computer, being careful not to touch any of the components directly. If there is a lot of dust and dirt, repeating the process several times may be required.
5. Use A Blower
For stubborn dust, you may want to use a blower to get into harder-to-reach spots. As with the vacuum cleaner, be sure not to touch any components directly with the blower.
6. Reassemble The Computer
After all dust and dirt has been removed, reassemble the computer by carefully reconnecting all the components and cables. Make sure all connections are secure before plugging the power cord back in and powering on the computer.
7. Clean The Monitor
To clean a monitor, begin by unplugging the monitor from the wall or from the back of the computer. Use a soft cloth, like a microfiber cloth, and some rubbing alcohol or a screen cleaning solution to wipe down the screen, being careful not to press too hard. For tougher buildups, you may need to spray the solution directly onto the cloth instead of the monitor itself.
8. Clean The Keyboard
To clean the keyboard, turn it upside down and shake it gently, then use a compressed air duster to blow out any remaining debris. To further clean, use a cotton swap dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean between the keys.
9. Clean The Mouse
Cleaning the mouse requires disassembly, depending on the type of mouse. For optical mice, use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to clean the lens and body of the mouse. For rollerball mice, use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to clean the roller ball, as well as any dirt and debris that may be caught in the grooves of the body.
10. Clean Hard Drives And Discs
Use a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol or a screen cleaning solution to wipe down the outside of the hard drive or CD/DVD disc. Avoid using water on either device, as water can cause damage.
Regular computer cleaning and maintenance is an important step in keeping the computer running smoothly. By following these steps, you can easily keep your computer clean and running like new. Additionally, you should think about upgrading your computer’s hardware if necessary in order to ensure it is running efficiently and effectively.
