The process of configuring which programs launch when Windows starts up is referred to as “autostarting” or “startup configuration”. Fortunately, Windows offers a simple way to view, enable/disable, and manage the programs that automatically start when your computer boots up.
To begin, press the “Windows” key + “R” on your keyboard (or open the “Run” dialog by navigating to the Start menu). This will open a run dialog box.
Type “msconfig” and then click “OK”. This will open the System Configuration Utility.
From here, navigate to the “Startup” tab. This is where you can view a list of all the programs set to autostart on your system. Each program will have a checkbox associated with it – if you want to disable a program from launching at startup, simply uncheck the box next to its name. Likewise, if you want to enable a program to launch at startup, check the box next to its name.
You can also configure additional programs to auto-start by clicking the “Add” button. This will open a new window where you can browse for programs on your hard drive. When you find the program you want to add, select it, and click “Open”. This will add the program to the autostart list.
If you ever need to remove a program from the autostart list, highlight it in the list and click the “Remove” button. You’ll be prompted to confirm the removal; click “Yes” to finish unlinking the program from the startup process.
When you’re finished making changes to the startup programs, click “Apply” and then “OK”. Your changes will be saved and the next time you start your computer, only the programs you configured will launch.
It’s important to remember that disabling startup programs can lead to performance issues. Most programs that are set to autostart are essential components of your system and are required for normal operation. Be sure to only disable programs that you are certain are not needed and that are not related to the operating system or other essential elements.
By taking the time to review and configure which programs autostart when you start your computer, you can ensure that your system runs smoothly and only the essentials are launched during startup.
