Network settings can be adjusted in the Windows control panel. It is recommended to have basic knowledge of computer networks and settings before attempting to alter them.
1. Open the Control Panel by pressing the Windows key + R together. In the box that appears type control panel, and then select ‘OK’.
2. In the Control Panel window, go to Network and Internet > Network Connections.
3. Select the Local Area Network (LAN) or Wireless Internet connection you want to adjust.
4. Right-click on the connection and select Properties.
5. The properties window will show all the details about the connection, including the network type and current settings.
6. To change the network type or settings, select the appropriate tab and make your adjustments.
7. You may need to input username and password information if you’re trying to join a secure network.
8. Once you’ve finished making your changes, select OK at the bottom of the window.
9. If the changes require a restart, you’ll be prompted to save your work and restart your computer.
10. After restarting your computer, your new settings should take effect.
Your ability to adjust a network setting depends on the type of network you’re on. On a home network, you may be able to change the network name and password, while on a work or school network, your settings might be restricted and require permission from an IT administrator.
If you’re having trouble connecting to a network, check to make sure you’re entering all the information correctly. If you’re still having difficulty after adjusting your network settings, you may need to contact your network administrator.
