The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database of system and user settings stored on the computer that control various aspects of the operating system. This includes everything from installed applications, shared libraries, system services, hardware profiles, and user preferences. Common information stored in the registry includes file associations, fonts, Startup Applications and Application Paths, Device Drivers, Network Connections, Program Settings, and User Profiles. Other information such as software usage history, user access rights, and system security can also be stored in the registry.
